Atraumatic Restorative Treatment - ART For Dental Caries | ACFF

چکیده
Atraumatic restorative treatment (ART) is an alternative treatment for dental caries used to emove demineralized and insensitive outer carious dentin with hand instruments only. Therefore, no electricity or anesthesia is required and pain, usually experienced in conventional cavity preparation, is kept to a minimum. Originally, ART was developed for use in developing rural countries because it does not require local anesthesia or electricity. More recently, ART has become increasingly accepted in developed countries because of its “atraumatic” approach in relation to the stress and pain experienced by patients. ART conserves tooth structure, minimizing trauma, and has been found to reduce pain perhaps due to the creation of smaller cavities. This technique has been found to be useful in children, elderly, special needs patients and those patients with fear and anxiety about dental treatment1,3. Pain and anxiety are significantly lower in both children and adults who receive ART therapy compared to conventional therapy 2,3. Overall, patients feel less fear and discomfort when receiving ART compared to conventional rotary instruments. Hand instruments are used to remove carious tooth substance. Anesthesia is not necessary. The cavity is filled and adjacent enamel fissures are sealed with conventional self-hardening glass ionomer restorative cement. Little information is available about use of materials other than GIC in this method4. Hence GIC (glass ionomer cement) is the filling material of choice for ART.

This paper presents a review of the literature on clinical trials with Atraumatic Restorative Treatment. The available scientific literature is encouraging in terms of management of dental caries by this approach, especially for one-surface lesions. The steps of ART are described and the crucial points highlighted. The incorporation of ART into primary health care services, as Family Health Pro...
متن کاملAtraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART): factors affecting success.
The success of tooth restorations rendered according to principles of the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) approach is dependant on various clinical factors. The most common failures, due to these factors, are partial material loss; complete material loss; caries related to restoration margin and material wear > 0.5mm. The main reason for clinical ART failures are related to operator skil...
متن کاملEffectiveness of Modified Class IV Atraumatic Restorative Treatment – One Year Clinical Follow-Up
Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) has become an evidence-based treatment in class I caries cavities for countries with developing dental infrastructure [1]. Though epidemiological data also demonstrate restorative treatment needs in anterior teeth in several African countries [2], scientific evidence for ART in this application appeared so far unrewarding [3]. Consequently, many carious te...

The conception, of what was termed later, the Atraumatic Restorative Treatment (ART) approach, took place in 1985. From that date onwards, emphasis was placed on researching various aspects of ART in the fields of behavioural, clinical, laboratory and public health science with the aim to improve this caries management philosophy through constructing a strong foundation for its evidence-based u...
